The Charles Lewis Beach Society

Your Legacy for UConn

The Charles Lewis Beach Society is the namesake of Charles Lewis Beach, a man of foresight and good works whose concern and love for the University of Connecticut and its students extended far beyond his lifetime. In so honoring him, we recognize those who similarly make provisions in their wills and other estate and planned gifts to The University of Connecticut Foundation, Inc. for the benefit of the University.

President Beach is remembered in part for his role as teacher and leader of what was, in 1908, the young Connecticut Agricultural College. Through his will, he also provided support for student enrichment and for the institution that was to grow into the University. Today, the Louise Crombie Beach Memorial Collection of Art and the Louise Crombie Beach Memorial Foundation, made possible through lifetime and planned gifts by President Beach, continue to enrich the lives of students and the University community alike.

The 21st Annual Beach Society Luncheon

More than 80 attendees celebrated the contributions of planned giving and learned how far UConn has come, and the exciting development plans for the future, when the Charles Lewis Beach Society held its 21st annual luncheon in Storrs on June 14, 2007.

The keynote speaker for the event was M. Dolan Evanovich, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management at the University of Connecticut. Evanovich has played key leadership roles as UConn has transformed into a nationally ranked and highly respected academic institution. His presentation focused on three primary areas: the ability of the University to attract and retain today's students, how UCONN 2000 and 21st Century UConn have dramatically changed the University, and, lastly, the future plans for the new Storrs Center project.

“Dolan's presentation showed all of us how alumni support of the University can have a great impact on our ability to attract talented students through scholarships and fellowships,” says Hal C. Reed, J.D., CFRE, assistant vice president for planned giving at The University of Connecticut Foundation, Inc. "Especially for those attendees who hadn't been to the campus in a long time, his tour of the changes that have occurred was eye-opening."

Beach Society members attending the luncheon were recognized for their generous contributions to the university community, and more than 40 new members were welcomed as well. The Society honors those who provide for the University through their wills and other planned gifts, including life insurance, charitable gift annuities and other methods, regardless of the size of the donation. Building upon nearly 80 years of planned giving at the University, the Society members’ contributions have helped to fund scholarships, professorships and academic programs.
